After the two 7” vinyls, the Finish Giglinger here makes their first steps on cd-format, resulting in an overwhelming crossover production. The guitar riffs are harder than steel while the electronic arrangements create a surprising climax in style and sound. The quality of the mix and production is simply professional while the harmony between muscled guitar parts and electronics is close to perfection! Songs like “The prime suspect” and especially “Downforce” are pure class acts! This is an amazing production coming from the high north! (DP 7/8)

Giglinger is a four piece from Finland that seems slightly mysterious (no shows, no albums) but also produce fairly capable industrial punk. Think along the lines of Ministry, but a little different. While the mysterious mannerisms want me to think this is some sort of supergroup, the fact that they’re all from Finland made me realize that even if they were, no one would give a shit. The four songs on this EP aren’t a bad start but there’s not a lot to go on here to really say for sure. It’s all put together well, but nothing really jumps out and does a whole lot for me.

Giglinger have something of a marketing strategy going for them: “No gigs, no full-length albums, no bullshit.” They have released 2 7”s and now a CD EP since ´97, though, so they’re not completely nihilist in their approach to commercialising their art. And it must be art, because there’s a cop in full combat gear on the cover, and they use a drum machine. They also sing about a “Disneyland freak show”. Despite the title, there’s not as much distortion on this one as on their “Big Muff” 7” (reviewed in LowCut # 11), which is a shame, because that was one thing I liked about them. This sounds more like straight punk rock’n’roll, and therefore not as interesting to me. A bit like Suicide, but not as champagne, cocaine, coli cocktail decadent as the New Yorkers. These guys probably even have families and all to take care of. (Jon A 3/5)

Scratch, scratch. Sorry, dear reader, I’m scratching my head….scratch, scratch. No, I don’t have a bad case of lice (my bold skull is as inviting to the little buggers as the dessert is for a fish). No, I’m wondering what to make of this ‘Distortion+’ EP of the Finnish Giglinger. What is the case? These Fins play a punk version of industrial. No, not in the veins of The Prodigy. It’s more like a mix of Ministry and Filter with a shot of street punk. The four tracks on the EP are solid and wouldn’t be out of place on the soundtrack of a movie like The Crow 3. The strange thing is that the gents don’t do gigs, don’t release albums and so on. Why not? God knows, because this stuff sounds promising. Okay, it isn’t exactly the most innovating thing I have heard recently, but nevertheless… And on the Net there’s also no information around…kind of a mystery, this band. Whatever the case, it’s a shame, because with a track like ‘The Prime Suspect’ as test sample I’m curious about the whole product. (Frank 70/100)

A four track EP from this Finnish band who apparently have a strategy of “no gigs, no full-length albums, no bullshit.” The band consists of two guitarists, a singer, a bass player and a drum machine. The first couple of songs remind me of early Killing Joke, and I can appreciate what they’re doing, I like the speed and the intensity of them. The second two are more Ministry sounding, and it’s not really my thing. Not sure there’s really enough here to keep me playing this, but it’s not bad. (Tony)

I can’t come up with anything else to compare with as I usually don’t listen to this kind of experimental stuff. The songs should be more variated but are pretty o.k. For some reason it’s pretty hard to come up with anything else to say about this Finnish band, so I leave it to you to make your own opinion about them..

The guitar riffs are locked in tight with the electronic beats and gruff, bellicose vocals rounding it all out in the finest of Jaz Coleman styles. ‘Mean Streets’ gets my vote as top tune. Gotta say, in a 4-song burst, this is thrilling but over a full album it could get a bit one-dimensional. Looking forward to the next 4-tracker.

I try not to review bands that end in “–inger”, especially EPs. But two things struck me: one, the cover looks just like this Sisters of Mercy bootleg I have (Andrew Eldritch’s silhouette against a red-lighted, smoky stage background); and two, they mailed this from Finland, a magical land of darkness and scary gods.
So I put it on, and it’s about what I expected – hard-edged rock with industrial-electro drums. It’s actually not bad. The lead singer sounds a little like James Hetfield without the “-NYA!” after every line. And the music is like early Ministry. Can’t go wrong there.
Four tracks, all decent.
RATING & SUMMARY:
Bottom Line: Good music for grinding against hot goth girls.
Notable Tracks: Mean Street (cool-sounding drums during the chorus)
(Adam Coozer 3/5)

Hmm, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything like this before. Industrial gothpunk, a genre you’ve ever heard of? Me neither. And while it’s a tad groundbreaking it’s also a tad annoying. If Rob Zombie happened to be a punkrocker instead of a metalhead this is what his solo project would sound like. And that’s not bad. Unfortunately Giglinger have a tendency to send out Marilyn Manson vibes, and that’s just wrong! But that only happens every now and then, so I’ll do my best to look pass it.
For the first listen this CD bugged the hell out of me, but I have a hard time sitting still while Distortion+ is on. The production’s perfect for this weird-as-hell music, so I can’t say there’s anything to complain about.
While this is very energetic, catchy and original it’s just a bit too schizoid for my taste. But if you’re a stoned guy/gal into metal, punk or industrial synthesizer based music you should have no problem rocking along to this. The key is probably however to be severely stoned. Imagine a mix of Rob Zombie, Misfits, Danzig, Marilyn Manson and The Streets, and you should get this confused state of mind I have right now.
